My Rite of Passage Name...
My name, onemankando, is pronounced, "one-man-kanh-doh."
Meaning - one man's encompassing awe, wonder and profound appreciation.
It is my understanding, the Japanese word "Kando" is like a futile attempt to explain the unexplainable. A deep feeling of satisfaction and awe. It is the emotional and profound sense of wonder inspiring the deepest of positive emotions and reflection. Empowering and transforming one's perspective and viewpoints.
Although not remotely fluent verbally or in the written form, I have freely used Japanese terms throughout my website. Kando, Ikigai, Kaizen, and Kitsugi.
Why? To me, they are more impactful and offer significantly more depth and meaning to my mission, my vows, and who I actually am. It is certainly is not to be fashionable. It is done with deep contemplation, tremendous honor, and genuine respect and gratitude.
It's Matter of House Keeping...
Look around. The world is an incredibly very dirty, messy, and untidy place. In more ways than one.
These days, sadly, it seems like almost seems like everyone (even me) is attacking and flinging trash at one another. Living life at odds with one another and frequently even with ourselves. Especially the later for me...
So this is why our shared environment and nature ultimately pays the price. Not to mention all of the inhabitants. When is greed going to be surpassed by actual care, investment, instead of some political nonsense.
External = Internal and Vice Versa.
External: Due to this, In my own personal experience, observations and opinion, it is no accident or coincidence that the Pacific Garbage Patch has 1.8 trillion pieces weighing about 80,000 metric tonnes or more.
The Pacific Garbage Patch tends to get a lot of media attention. Important fact, and not surprising, is all oceans have them. Gyres, circular rotation of the oceans driven by the earth winds.
Internal: As mentioned, I have come to believe that single piece of trash laying about, often ignored, is systemic of the bigger, grander issues that all of humanity faces and contributes to. Directly and/or indirectly. Knowingly or unknowingly. Everyone. Including me...
So, all that being said, how much trash has my Inner Garbage Patch accumulated over the years? A lot... This project has helped me identify and recognize this.
I had to be, and continue to have to be, honest with my self. If I am not willing to do the simple and right things, how can I possibility contribute to the minimization and/or elimination of the larger issues?
The Sound of Silence...
In other words, there are no recognizable words, on this very noisy planet. JUST NOISE.
Is this impossible to believe in this world of broken tape recordings transmitted over bullhorns? Not to mention, seemingly every other method known to modern day mankind.
Repeat, rewind, play again....repeat, rewind, play again... Talking over one another... Who is right? Who is wrong?
Sound familiar?
Here, and now, I am attempting to do the complete opposite. Aside from this page and a few others, something new. At least for me it is. Promote the seemingly seldom used idea that - Less is More.
Perhaps the most powerful and impactful moments is the silence between the action in film, notes of music and nature. This is called "Ma" in Japanese.
It seemed fitting for me to extend this here as I did during my clean ups. Listen with my eyes and hear with my heart and subconscious.
Therefore, it is my intention is to communicate visually within the framework of my love of art and photography. Silently and within three galleries. The bullhorn is quiet, at least for now. My hope is the visual bullhorn picks up where words could never do justice of the vital importance of recognizing, admitting, and desperate need of benevolent peaceful action. As you will see this just does not pertain to pollution and the environment. It starts in the most important place. Internally, within heart, mind, body and soul.
