Two glass shards on a sandy beach near the ocean waves.

Kintsugi...

Kintsugi, is a century old Japanese art form.  Where cracked or broken ceramics are mended with a gold, silver or paint infused adhesive.  Its simplicity and esthetics are simply beautiful.  This practice is done instead of disposal.  The joined/repaired areas show the highlight the objects history with honor and intention.  Celebrating the value instead of automatic disposal.

To be able to see the perfection, in the imperfection.  The beauty in bumps, bruises, scars and even trash.  I believe that my clean up efforts, artwork/photography, philosophies and this website strives to hold this as a core belief and value.

Additional philosophies behind this practice are:

  • Wabi Sabi - finding beauty within imperfection
  • Mottainai - regret over waste and providing an item a send chance
  • Mushin - the practice of non-attachment and the willingness to accept change

I look at my clean ups and artwork as a form to honor Kintsugi and its related philosophies.  Not to mention being able to see and now (most of the time) embrace and work on my own imperfections.

Rather than having an About page, I feel the Japanese concepts philosophies shared better summarize better than I ever could.  A great deal of careful thought has been put into creation of my website.

External = Internal.  It's all connected.
